Letter From the Principal: October 2018

Dear Families,

It is hard to believe that we turn the calendar to November just next week. As we wrap up the eighth week of school, students have settled into their classrooms and teachers are making the most of each day they have with children. We are excited by the possibilities for academic and social gains for each of our students this year.

Parent-Teacher Conferences
Teachers are currently meeting with parents for fall conferences. At conferences teachers share each individual’s academic progress, how a child is doing socially, and parents have the opportunity to ask questions and raise any concerns they may have. Our goal is for parents to leave with a better understanding of how their child is doing, understand their child’s strengths and areas of concern, and know ways they can support their child at home. Teachers generally schedule 15-20 minute conferences so a lot of information is covered in a short amount of time. As always, we appreciate any and all feedback you may have for us as we work to partner with you in your child’s learning.

Family Literacy Month
This November, Underwood will again celebrate Family Literacy Month. Our focus this year is on building early reading skills and a calendar with daily activities will be sent home next week. As our youngest students begin to read, we often hear parents ask questions about how they can support their child’s early reading at home. We hope to answer these questions with the activities suggested in the calendar and in the Principal’s Coffee hosted on Friday, November 16th from 8:30 – 9:30 in Room 1. Stacey Mann, Literacy Coach, will join me for the coffee. While our target audience is parents of students in grades K-2, all are welcome.

School Council
School Council is a committee that assists and advises the principal and is made up of parents, teachers, and community members. One of the most important tasks the School Council engages in is the development of the School Improvement Plan. If you are interested in serving on the Underwood School Council, please submit a brief letter of interest to me.

This year School Council meetings will be held on Mondays (dates below) from 3:30 – 4:45 PM in my office.
